What is your advice about? Behaviour

1: It is your rules, your classroom. Make the rules explicit.

2: Accept no excuses for poor behaviour; home life bad? All the more reason to get a good education.

3: Give detentions for poor behaviour, but use them wisely. The punishment should fit the crime.

4: Use praise wisely. Praise for above and beyond expectations.

5: When you are secure that you have the behaviour under control, relax and enjoy the company of students.

5 Bits of Advice About: Teaching Maths

  1. Teach for understanding, not coverage of the scheme of work.
  2. Use concrete manipulative for all, not just lower sets.
  3. Make explicit links between concepts.
  4. Don’t try to make learning of maths ‘fun’. It can be fun, but that shouldn’t be your main aim.
  5. Teach to the top and support the bottom. Differentiate by support and scaffolding not content.
